Description

Cefprozil is a cephalosporin antibiotic that binds to the penicillin-binding proteins in the bacterial cell wall, preventing the formation of an antibiotic-inhibitor complex with the enzyme cell wall synthesis that is required for cell wall biosynthesis. It has been used as a treatment for streptococcal pharyngitis, bacterial rhinosinusitis, and other infections caused by gram-positive bacteria. Cefprozil has also been shown to have antiinflammatory properties. The mechanism of action for this drug is not well understood, but it has been shown to inhibit IL-2 receptor expression and IL-2 mediated activation of T cells in vitro. Cefprozil also inhibits induction of proinflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-1β by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in vitro.
