3-(4-Chlorophenylsulfonyl)butyric acid (CSBA) is an anion that is the conjugate of 3-chlorobenzoic acid. It is a biliary excretory product and is transported by the organic anion transporter. CSBA has been shown to be a growth factor for hepatocytes and may have a role in bilirubin transport and metabolism. CSBA has also been found to be associated with mutant bile acids which are linked with hepatic fibrosis, cirrhosis, and carcinogenesis. CSBA inhibits the production of bilirubin by hepatocytes, thus decreasing serum bilirubin levels.
