3-Chlorophenoxyacetic acid is a chemical that belongs to the class of organic acids. It is a short-chain fatty acid containing chlorine and an esterified phenol group. 3-Chlorophenoxyacetic acid inhibits plant growth by interfering with the synthesis of fatty acids, which are important for cell division. 3-Chlorophenoxyacetic acid has been shown to inhibit the activity of enzymes that catalyze the conversion of short-chain fatty acids into long-chain fatty acids. This inhibition leads to a decrease in lipid accumulation, which may lead to stunted plant growth. 3-Chlorophenoxyacetic acid also inhibits chlorophyll synthesis, which is necessary for photosynthesis in plants.
