- 3-(3-Chlorophenyl)-3-oxopropanenitrile
3-Chlorobenzoylacetonitrile (3CB) is a trifunctional molecule that reacts with a fatty acid to form a metal chelate, which can be used as an artificial substrate film. It has been shown that 3CB can be used to detect the presence of calcium in urine samples. 3CB also reacts with a hydroxyl group to form an active methylene, which can be used as a probe in x-ray crystallography. The hydroxy group on the benzene ring of 3CB is important for its activity. In addition, 3CB has been shown to react with benzoate and malonic acid as well as human serum.
