It can be prepared by the reaction of carboxylic acids with ethylene glycol in the presence of an inorganic base such as sodium hydroxide, sodium methoxide, or potassium tert-butoxide. 4-(2-Carboxyethyl)benzoic acid has nitrogen atoms and ft-ir spectroscopic properties that are consistent with its role in hydrogen bonding interactions and fluorescence properties. This compound has also been shown to have supramolecular properties.
