(Chloromethyl)isopropoxydimethylsilane is an efficient method to synthesize a skeleton of an organic molecule. This synthetic route is stereoselective, which means that the reaction will only go in one direction and produce a single type of stereoisomer. The synthesis can be used for many different molecules with a variety of functional groups. (Chloromethyl)isopropoxydimethylsilane is used to synthesize the antifungal agent fluorine-containing protoberberine alkaloids. The chlorine atom in this molecule may be substituted with other halogens, such as bromine or iodine, or with other groups, such as hydroxymethyl group or chloride. It has been shown that this chemical can inhibit the growth of fungi by binding to ergosterol in the cell membrane and disrupting its function.
