2-Chloro-6-fluorobenzonitrile is a synthetic, activated carboxylic acid that can be used as a plant growth regulator. It's an extracellular inhibitor of plant enzymes and can be used to inhibit the activity of enzymes that are involved in the production of phenolic compounds. 2-Chloro-6-fluorobenzonitrile has been shown to inhibit the activity of enzymes such as phenylalanine ammonia lyase, which catalyzes the conversion of phenylalanine to cinnamic acid. This compound is also able to inhibit plant cell division because it inhibits the enzyme phospholipase. 2-Chloro-6-fluorobenzonitrile is soluble in water and has a boiling point of 190°C at atmospheric pressure. It can be synthesized by a chemoenzymatic process that requires temperatures between 50°C and 100°C.
