3-Chloro-2-fluorobenzoic acid is a reagent that is used in the industrial production of other chemicals. It is a multistep reaction solution that starts with the oxidation of 3-chlorobenzoic acid to 3,4-dichlorobenzoyl chloride. This intermediate product is then reacted with sodium fluoride and hydrochloric acid to produce 3,4-dichlorofluorobenzoic acid. The final compound can be used as an anti-inflammatory agent. 3,4-Dichlorofluorobenzoic acid reacts with voltage-gated sodium channels in the cell membrane by binding to the acidic amino acids on the surface of the channel and blocking sodium ion flow through it. Sodium ions are necessary for transmission of nerve impulses and muscle contractions, so this activity leads to analgesia and muscle relaxation.
