4-Chloro-3-fluorophenol is a dechlorinated aromatic compound, which is used as an intermediate for the production of other chemicals. The 4-chloro group can be reduced to the corresponding hydrocarbon with sodium or magnesium metal in the presence of molybdate and sulfate. The reaction proceeds via a radical mechanism and requires strong reductants such as activated aluminum, iron, tin, or manganese. This reaction can be conducted at high temperatures if necessary. The chlorine atom in 4-chloro-3-fluorophenol can also be replaced by other halogens via substitution reactions with chlorinating agents such as phosphorus oxychloride or thionyl chloride. 4-Chloro-3-fluorophenol can also be oxidized to form 4-chlorophenol (4CP) by treatment with potassium permanganate or osmium tetroxide in the presence of water.
