Corticotropin Releasing Factor (CRF) is a peptide hormone and neurotransmitter that regulates stress response. CRF is released by the hypothalamus in response to stress and other stimuli, such as pain or emotional distress. CRF has been shown to increase locomotor activity and brain functions in humans. In addition, CRF has been shown to inhibit the synthesis of cyclase inhibitors, which may be related to its role in regulating inflammation and disease activity. The physiological levels of cortisol are increased by CRF, which may lead to obesity. Cortisol concentrations are correlated with body mass index (BMI). CRF also has biological properties that promote the release of corticosterone, adrenocorticotropic hormone, and growth hormone from the anterior pituitary gland.
