Chromone-3-carboxylic acid is a reactive molecule that has been shown to exhibit antimicrobial properties. The three-dimensional structure of this molecule was first determined by vibrational spectroscopy, which showed that the hydroxy group and carbonyl group are in a hydrogen bond. Computational methods were used to determine the mechanism of reaction for chromone-3-carboxylic acid. This method showed that the presence of chloride ions or carbon disulphide could lead to the formation of a reactive intermediate. Chromone-3-carboxylic acid's cytostatic effects have been shown in both bacteria and mammalian cells, where it inhibits protein synthesis and induces apoptosis. Active methylene groups on chromone-3-carboxylic acid have also been shown to react with thiols, forming thioethers, which can act as inhibitors of enzymes such as phosphatases.
