4-Chloro-2-methylquinoline is a quinoline derivative with high specificity for amines. It is synthesized by dequalinium chloride, hexane, and real-time fluorescence. 4-Chloro-2-methylquinoline is a fluorescent probe that can be used to detect amines in the presence of chloride ions. The compound also reacts with naphthalene to produce a red product (hence its name) which can be detected using hydrogenated anthranilic acid. Hydrochloric acid and hydrogen are used as catalysts for this reaction.
