Chromium(3+) Perfluorooctanoate is a reagent that is used to synthesize organic fluorides. It can be used in the synthesis of organic fluorides, such as perfluoroalkanes, which are used in many industrial applications due to their high chemical stability and energy content. This reagent also has powerful luminescent properties, and can be used as a reagent to study molecular structures in lanthanum-containing materials. Chromium(3+) Perfluorooctanoate reacts with stoichiometric amounts of fluorine gas and an excess of potassium fluoride or sodium fluoride at elevated temperatures. The reaction mechanism is based on the formation of a covalent bond between chromium(III) ion and the electrophilic fluorine atom, which results in the formation of an alkyl radical:

RCF + CrF → RCF•+ CrF

This alkyl radical then reacts with another molecule of fluorine
