4β-Carboxy-19-nortotarol is a natural product that has been isolated from the Podocarpaceae family. It inhibits microsomal lipid peroxidation and reduces mitochondrial enzyme activities in an animal model of oxidative injury. 4β-Carboxy-19-nortotarol also inhibits linoleic acid oxidation, which leads to the formation of an anion that can react with oxygen to form reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as hydrogen peroxide and hydroxyl radicals. These ROS have been shown to cause oxidative damage to DNA and proteins, which may lead to increased risk for chronic diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, and Alzheimer's disease.
