N,N-Dimethylaniline is an aromatic amine that belongs to the class of compounds known as azo dyes. It reacts with nitrous acid in the presence of a catalyst such as pyridine to form N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), a potent carcinogen. The reaction mechanism is thought to involve an initial formation of the nitroso intermediate followed by the addition of dimethylaniline. This process leads to the formation of NDMA and other nitrogen oxides. N,N-Dimethylaniline is used in many industrial processes, including as an intermediate in organic synthesis and as a solvent for pigments and resins.
