2,4-Dimethylphenol is a phenolic compound that has been used in wastewater treatment, as an antioxidant and preservative in food, and as a pharmaceutical drug. It is also known to have physiological effects on the prostate and oxygen transport to tissue. 2,4-Dimethylphenol can be found in many fruits and vegetables such as apples, pears, cherries and grapes. The analytical method for 2,4-dimethylphenol is based on the reaction of hydroxyl group with protocatechuic acid to form a diol. This reaction can be monitored by measuring the absorbance at 340 nm. 2,4-Dimethylphenol can also be synthesized from benzene using a platinum catalyst during oxidation of the benzene ring. The kinetic data for this reaction were obtained by linear calibration curve obtained from plotting the logarithm of concentration versus time.
