2,4-Dihydroxy-3-nitropyridine is an aralkyl compound that is used as a hypolipidemic agent. It has been shown to lower blood cholesterol levels by inhibiting the synthesis of lipids in the liver and also by stimulating the conversion of cholesterol into bile acids. The mechanism of action for 2,4-dihydroxy-3-nitropyridine is not fully understood but it has been found to inhibit phosphoric acid production in the body and may have beneficial effects on cardiovascular diseases such as myocardial infarction and ischemia. It has also been shown to reduce myocardial damage caused by ischemia.
