Dacarbazine is an antineoplastic agent that inhibits the division of cancer cells by acting as a prodrug to produce the active form, dacarbazine trioxide. It has been shown to be effective in vitro for the treatment of melanoma and other solid tumours. Dacarbazine has been used in combination with other chemotherapeutic agents, such as temozolomide, for the treatment of brain tumours and carcinoid syndrome. The drug is associated with acute toxicities, including myelosuppression, alopecia, nausea and vomiting. These side effects can be reduced using interferon-alfa-2b. Dacarbazine has also been shown to have mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) stabilizing properties that are independent of its cytotoxic effects on tumour cells.
