Diethyl aminoacetonitrile (DEAN) is an aliphatic hydrocarbon that has a molecular formula of C6H14N2. It is used in the preparation of hydroxamic acids and hydroxylated amines by reaction with water. The radiation-induced polymerization of DEAN yields polyimides, which have been shown to have excellent resistance to a variety of solvents and chemicals. This chemical has also been used as a precursor for the synthesis of heterocyclic amines, such as 2-aminopyridine and 4-aminopyridine. The fluorine atom on the trifluoromethyl group makes DEAN a good candidate for reactions involving sulfonic acids, such as sulfonylation reactions.
