Description :
2,3-Dimethylfuran is a pharmaceutical preparation that is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of other drugs. It is normally prepared by reacting 2,3-dimethylbenzaldehyde with ammonia and sulfuric acid. The reaction mechanism is not well understood, but it is thought that the carbonyl group of this compound reacts with water vapor to produce 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. This reaction proceeds under acidic conditions and requires a solid catalyst. The dehydration of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural produces 2,3-dimethylfuran.
