Dipropyl phthalate also has been shown to cause cell death in bacteria through the inhibition of protein synthesis in bacteria. Dipropyl phthalate has an effect on physiological functions, such as hydrolases and hydrogen fluoride production, which are necessary for bacterial growth. The toxicity of dipropyl phthalate can be increased by hydrogen fluoride (HF) exposure because HF enhances the release of reactive oxygen species from this compound.
