(2,6-Difluorophenyl) acetonitrile is a water-soluble compound that was originally used as a solvent for photographic film. It has been shown to be an inhibitor of neutrophil function by reducing the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). This compound also inhibits the release of inflammatory cytokines and the synthesis of proinflammatory mediators in neutrophils. (2,6-Difluorophenyl) acetonitrile has been shown to inhibit the mitochondrial matrix enzyme citrate synthase, which is responsible for converting citrate into oxaloacetate. This inhibition leads to reduced ATP production, which may be due to this drug's ability to inhibit mitochondrial protein synthesis.
