2,4-Dichloro-5-methylpyrimidine is a colorless gas that has been implicated as the cause of a number of cases of syncope. The clinical data suggests that this compound may be an amine with symptoms including skin rashes and erythematous lesions. A number of retrospective studies have found the onset of disease to be preceded by exposure to 2,4-Dichloro-5-methylpyrimidine in nature or in the environment. Further studies have shown that there are two isomers: 2,4-dichloro-5-methylpyridine and 2,6-dichloro-5-methylpyridine. Both isomers can cause hypersensitivity reactions but it is unclear which one is responsible for the observed symptoms.
