Description :
2,2-Dimethyl-1,3-benzodioxole is a synthetic chemical that is used in the industrial production of acetonitrile. It can be synthesized from benzene and diethyl etherate. The reaction proceeds via an electrophilic addition to the double bond followed by a protonation step. The activated 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-benzodioxole reacts with benzene to produce 3 products: phenylacetaldehyde, acetophenone, and acetone. The reaction selectivity depends on the type of solvent used and its polarity.
