2-(2,5-Dichlorophenoxy)propanoic acid is a carcinogenic industrial chemical that belongs to the group of chlorophenols. It has been shown to damage DNA and cause cancer in animal models. This compound has been used as an intermediate in the production of other chemicals. 2-(2,5-Dichlorophenoxy)propanoic acid also has mutagenic activity and causes mutations in bacterial cells that are exposed to it. The mechanism is not well understood but may involve cytochrome P450 enzymes or DNA repair mechanisms. 2-(2,5-Dichlorophenoxy)propanoic acid is classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as a Group 2B carcinogen (possible human carcinogen).
