(2,5-Dimethylphenoxy)acetic acid is a metabolite of 2,5-dimethylphenol that is found in the environment. It has been shown to be an inhibitor of the enzymes involved in carbohydrate metabolism and a competitive inhibitor of the enzyme pyruvate kinase. (2,5-Dimethylphenoxy)acetic acid has been shown to have affinity for hydrophobic binding sites on the enzyme. The short-chain fatty acid also inhibits transition and modelling reactions in bacteriophages by binding to their DNA. The structure of this compound is similar to that of other metabolites with antibiotic activity. This molecule is also able to terminate DNA replication by demethylating cytosine residues at the 3' position.
