7-(Diethylamino)coumarin-3-carboxylic acid N-succinimidyl ester is a synthetic molecule that has been used as a fluorescent probe to study the transfer of drugs and other molecules across biological membranes. The compound is synthesized by coupling 7-(diethylamino)coumarin-3-carboxylic acid with succinic anhydride in the presence of 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO). This molecule has been shown to be highly water soluble, nonpolar, and photostable. It can also be detected using fluorescence microscopy and is useful for studying membrane protein function.
