2,4-Dichloro-5-aminopyrimidine is a drug that has been shown to have potential as a chemotherapeutic agent. It is synthesized by the diazotization of 2,4-dichloro-5-nitropyrimidine with sodium nitrite and hydrochloric acid in the presence of triethyl orthoformate. The reaction products are then separated by fractional crystallization. The product obtained is an aminopyrimidine derivative that contains a methyl group on one of the nitrogen atoms. This compound reacts with tyrosine residues on proteins and may lead to cancer cell death through inhibition of DNA synthesis and protein synthesis. 2,4-Dichloro-5-aminopyrimidine can also be synthesized in the gas phase by reacting anilines with silver oxide in the presence of ammonia.
