2,6-Dichlorobenzyl alcohol is a drug substance in the form of colorless liquid with an unpleasant odor. It is used as a solvent and has a reaction mechanism that activates the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase. This activation leads to the production of acetaldehyde, which is oxidized to acetic acid by the enzyme acylaldehyde dehydrogenase. 2,6-Dichlorobenzyl alcohol has been shown to lower blood pressure in rats. The mechanism of this effect may be due to its ability to activate adenylate cyclase and increase adrenaline release from nerve terminals in the heart. 2,6-Dichlorobenzyl alcohol can be analyzed using gas chromatography or liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry detection at 280 nm.
