2-(3,5-Dichlorophenyl)acetonitrile is a colorless liquid that is soluble in water and has a sweet odor. It is used as a solvent for dyes, resins, and rubber chemicals. 2-(3,5-Dichlorophenyl)acetonitrile's conformational properties are stabilized by the presence of protons or fluorine. The solvents have been shown to have potentials for use in chemical reactions involving benzyl chloride and chloroform. When protonated, it forms an equilibrium mixture of two conformers with opposite magnetic resonance spectra.

2-(3,5-Dichlorophenyl)acetonitrile can be used as a stable solvent in organic synthesis reactions because of its ability to stabilize conformations of reactants and products.
