2,4-Dimercapto-5,6-diamino-pyrimidine (DMPD) is a high molecular weight reagent that is used as an electron acceptor in potentiometric and coulometric titrations. It can be used to measure the concentration of hydrogen ions in an aqueous solution. DMPD has a reversible reaction with the amino group of proteins and peptides, forming the covalent bond between them. The molecule is neutral, which means it does not react with any other compounds. DMPD has a molecular weight of 576 g/mol. It also reacts with water to form hydrogen gas and ammonia. DMPD is soluble in alkaline solutions and ionizes in an electric field. The electrode potential for this compound is +0.3 volts at pH 7 and +0.7 volts at pH 10 - 11
