N,N'-Dimethyl-1,4-butanediamine is an aliphatic diamine that is used to prepare polyamides. It can be synthesized by the reaction of ethylenediamine and formaldehyde in the presence of a catalyst. The methylene group in this molecule is not involved in intramolecular hydrogen bonds and does not contribute to its polarity. N,N'-Dimethyl-1,4-butanediamine has high yields because it reacts intramolecularly with itself. This process forms linear chains by forming a methylene unit link between two amines. The conformation of these chains determines the properties of the resulting polyamide. Polystyrene molecules are linear due to their intramolecular bonding.
