Description

3,3'-Dimethylbiphenyl is an acetylated biphenyl with a chlorinated side chain. Acetylation of the biphenyl ring increases its solubility in organic solvents and micellar solutions. The acetyl group also increases the lipophilic character of the molecule, which is important for its ability to penetrate cellular membranes. 3,3'-Dimethylbiphenyl has been shown to be effective against cancer cells and has been investigated as a possible anticancer drug. This compound is activated by electron-deficient molecules such as electrophiles or proton donors, although it does not readily react with nucleophiles. It can undergo desulfurization reactions that are catalyzed by elemental sulfur or iron sulfide minerals. 3,3'-Dimethylbiphenyl has been shown to undergo cycloaliphatic reactions when heated at high temperatures and reacts with chloride ions at low temperatures to form an isomeric product
