4,5-Dimethyl-2-isopropylthiazole is a volatile organic compound that has been identified as an index of biotechnology in the air. It is produced by the microbial oxidation of soybean products and has a characteristic odor. This compound has been shown to be toxic to bacteria, inhibiting their growth and killing them. 4,5-Dimethyl-2-isopropylthiazole has also been shown to inhibit protein synthesis in bacteria with no effect on human cells or other mammalian cells in culture.
