5,10-Dihydro-5,10-dimethylphenazine is a cationic surfactant that has been extensively studied for its photophysical properties. It has been shown to have fluorescence lifetimes of approximately 5 nanoseconds, which is the longest lifetime for any cationic surfactant reported to date. The x-ray crystal structures of 5,10-dihydro-5,10-dimethylphenazine and related molecules have been determined and provide a model system for understanding the mechanism of the formation and decay of excited states in these compounds. Kinetic studies suggest that the rate of energy transfer from the excited state to an acceptor molecule is increased by increasing the electron density at the phenyl groups; this electron density can be increased by adding electrons or reducing overpotentials. 5,10-Dihydro-5,10-dimethylphenazine has an activation energy of approximately 26 kilojoules per mole (
