Description

5,6-Dihydro-4H-6-methylthieno[2,3-b]thiopyran-4-one is an intermediate of the drug clopidogrel. It is chiral and can be prepared from racemic 2-(bromomethyl)thiophene. The diastereomers of 5,6-dihydro-4H-6-methylthieno[2,3-b]thiopyran -4-one are separated by hydrogenation on a palladium catalyst or by chromatography on a chiral column. 5,6-Dihydro -4H -6 -methylthieno [2,3 -b] thiopyran 4 one has been shown to inhibit the formation of reactive oxygen species in cells that have been stimulated with hydrogen peroxide. This may be due to its ability to inhibit the activity of the enzyme NADPH oxidase.
