• Description: 2,3-Diaminopropionic acid is an antimicrobial peptide with significant cytotoxicity against cancer cells. This compound has two amine groups that are able to form hydrogen bonds with each other. The x-ray crystal structures of this molecule reveal that it forms a beta sheet structure and an alpha helix, which is essential for the stability of this compound. 2,3-Diaminopropionic acid has been shown to have strong antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria and good activity against Gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Salmonella enterica. This compound also inhibits the synthesis of proteins in bacterial cells by inhibiting the enzyme protein synthesis. 2,3-Diaminopropionic acid is stable under normal conditions but can be hydrolyzed in water vapor or ester hydrochloride. It reacts with nitrogen atoms on the surface of biological molecules to form amides.
