Description :
Donepezil is a cholinergic drug that inhibits acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is involved in many functions of the body, including muscle control and memory. Donepezil has been shown to be effective in treating Alzheimer's disease, dementia and bowel disease in humans. In addition, it can be used to treat other conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, myasthenia gravis and Parkinson's disease. Donepezil also has been shown to have low toxicity and few side effects. The drug has been shown to inhibit the rate constant for the reaction between 3-[1-(dimethylamino)ethyl]phenyl ethyl(methyl)carbamate (DMAT) with alzheimer-type enzymes.
