N,N-Dimethylanthranilic acid methyl ester is a tetrahydropyran derivative that has been shown to have insecticidal properties against mosquitoes. It has been shown to be active against mosquito larvae and pupae in laboratory tests. This compound may be used as a replacement for DEET, which is the most commonly used insect repellent. N,N-Dimethylanthranilic acid methyl ester is a silicone with a carbonyl group that can be synthesized by reacting butyl benzyl phthalate with carbon monoxide and methanol in the presence of a metal catalyst. The chloride ion can also be added to increase its effectiveness. It has been found to have no adverse effects on humans or animals when applied externally at concentrations up to 10%.
