4-(Dihydroxyborophenyl)acetylene (4DBPA) is a fluorescent molecule that has been used as a probe for studying the interactions of anions with metal surfaces. 4DBPA can be used to detect anions adsorbed on metal oxide surfaces. The fluorescence intensity of 4DBPA decreases in the presence of anions, and this decrease can be correlated to the affinity between 4DBPA and the anion. The fluorescence intensity also increases when 4DBPA interacts with certain types of ligands. This is because ligand binding changes the conformational equilibrium of 4DBPA and causes it to emit light at different wavelengths.
