Dehydronuciferine is a proton-containing dietary supplement that has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. It is also used as a chemical precursor in the production of the alkaloid, dehydronuciferine (DNH), which is a potent inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase. Dehydronuciferine can be derived from tyrosine through two steps: first, it undergoes acid hydrolysis with trifluoroacetic acid to form an ester intermediate and then undergoes reduction with hydrochloric acid. Dehydronuciferine can be produced at high purity levels by using supercritical CO2 extraction or by drying the root powder of Aporphinium erythraea. The effective dose for dehydronuciferine is not yet known, but studies suggest that it may be between 1-5mg/kg body weight.
