2,3-Dimethyl-2,3-dinitrobutane is a reactive chemical that has been used as an odorant. It can be synthesized by reacting methyl ethyl nitrite with hydrogen cyanide to form the nitroso compound. This reaction product undergoes a second reaction with hydroxyl groups on the surface of the sample to form 2,3-dimethyl-2,3-dinitrobutane. 2,3-Dimethyl-2,3-dinitrobutane has a strong odor and is soluble in water. The binding constants for this compound are relatively high and can be determined by measuring the optical sensor response. The activation energies for this compound are not known but can be calculated from thermodynamic data.
