Description

Deoxyviolacein is a synthetic analog of violacein, which is a natural product found in the bacterium Chromobacterium violaceum. Deoxyviolacein has been shown to inhibit bacterial growth and multidrug efflux pumps in vitro. This compound also has antimicrobial properties against Gram-positive bacteria and is effective as a model system for studying the physiological function of violacein. Deoxyviolacein inhibits the enzyme activity of β-lactamase and fatty acid synthase, which are enzymes that are necessary for bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to the hydroxyl group on deoxyviolacein and prevents it from being cleaved by chemical reactions with other molecules, preventing bacterial growth and replication.
