3,4-Dibromofuran-2,5-dione is a conjugate that reacts with the amine group of proteins to form a covalent bond. This reaction is reversible and can be used in tissue culture for the detection of antibodies. The second-order rate constant for the reaction was determined to be 0.0013 s−1 by measuring the time required for 50% of the substrate to react with 10% of the enzyme. 3,4-Dibromofuran-2,5-dione has been shown to form covalent bonds with an hydroxyl group on an amino acid residue or a hydroxy group on a sugar residue. It also has a disulfide bond that can reversibly react with glutathione and deionized water to form dehydroabietic acid.
