9-(2,2-Dicyanovinyl)julolidine (DJC) is a coumarin derivative that has been shown to be an effective antimicrobial agent. It interacts with the protein on the surface of bacteria and prevents them from adhering to host cells. This antibiotic also inhibits the production of reactive oxygen species in phagocytic cells, which may contribute to its antimicrobial activity. 9-(2,2-Dicyanovinyl)julolidine has been shown to inhibit the growth of Gram-positive bacteria and fungi, but is not active against Gram-negative bacteria.
