2,3-Dihydroxy-terephthalic acid is a monomer that belongs to the class of diols. It is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of polyesters and polycarbonates. The structure of 2,3-dihydroxyterephthalic acid has been determined by gravimetric analysis and spectroscopic methods, such as NMR and IR spectroscopy. The hydroxyl groups make it soluble in water. 2,3-Dihydroxy-terephthalic acid is a component of many different products or substances that are found in the environment or are synthesized industrially. It is also used to produce organic esters and other derivatives.
2,3-Dihydroxy-terephthalic acid can be synthesized from dihydric alcohols such as ethylene glycol or glycerol through a hydrolysis reaction with concentrated sulfuric acid at high temperature (200°C).
