1,2-Diaminoanthraquinone is an enzyme substrate that has been shown to inhibit the activity of glutathione reductase. It is a colorless liquid that is soluble in water and ether, but insoluble in ethanol. 1,2-Diaminoanthraquinone has been found to be carcinogenic in animal studies and is also used as a fluorescent probe for analytical chemistry. This molecule has a hydroxyl group that can form hydrogen bonding interactions with other molecules such as sodium carbonate or glycol ether, which may contribute to its carcinogenic properties.
