- 1H-Pyrrole, 3,4-dimethyl-
3,4-Dimethyl-1H-pyrrole is an inorganic compound that is the simplest member of the pyrrole family. It is a colorless liquid with a strong odor. 3,4-Dimethyl-1H-pyrrole has been observed to form micelles in water and other polar solvents. The reaction scheme for 3,4-dimethyl-1H-pyrrole begins with an acid molecule attacking one of the methyl groups on the pyrrole ring, which then produces a methyl radical and an acid anhydride. This radical then reacts with another methyl group on the pyrrole ring to form a dimerized product with two methyl radicals on each side of the ring. These two radicals then react to produce trimers (3 molecules) or higher polymers (10+ molecules). The polymerization can be stopped by adding a base such as sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide.
