Demelverine is a muscle relaxant that is used to prevent and treat muscle spasms. It binds with high affinity to cytochrome P-450 in the liver, which may be responsible for its metabolism. Demelverine has been shown to cause an increase in proton release from cardiac muscle cells. This drug also has a myoglobin-enhancing effect on cardiac muscle cells, which may be due to its ability to solubilize and stabilize myoglobin. Demelverine can be used as a marker for the presence of increased levels of skeletal muscle markers such as myoglobin or creatine kinase.
