Metoclopramide is a prokinetic drug that acts on the gastrointestinal tract by increasing gastric motility and peristalsis. It is also used to treat nausea and vomiting, especially in patients receiving chemotherapy. N-Desethyl metoclopramide is a metabolite of metoclopramide and has been detected in human urine at high concentrations following administration of the drug. Urinary metabolites may be analysed using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with UV detection. The metabolites can then be identified by comparison with reference standards or spectrometry. Metoclopramide has been shown to have antiemetic properties in animals and humans, but its mechanism of action remains unknown.
